Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership 2019 - 2020

Scottish Premier League

While Celtic's achievement in winning the championship for the eighth season in a row cannot be denied it does reflect how uncompetitive the Premiership has become. Consider, for example, that Kilmarnock and Aberdeen, who finished third and fourth respectively with 67 points were 11 points adrift of Rangers and 20 points behind Celtic.

On 13 March all matches in the SPFL were suspended because of the Covid-19 pandemic. On 18 May the Premiership was curtailed with final standings decided by points-per-game. (The lower divisions were ended in April.) This handed Celtic their ninth consecutive title and consigned Hearts to the Championship. The Edinburgh club immediately took legal action to reverse the decision but were unsuccessful. A proposal by the club's chairperson, Anne Budge, to expand the Premiership to 14 club's (which would have ensured Hearts woud have remained in the top tier) failed to attract support from the other clubs.

Sponsor: Saltire

Because Celtic won the league and cup last season, the spot allocated to the Scottish Cup winner was passed to Aberdeen who had finished in fourth place. Much is made in the launch blurb about the fact that the Dons wore black and gold in the middle ages so that's why Adidas have served up the new change kit. Oh come on children why not tell us it's a nice change from white or black? And it's shiny.

Celtic won the domestic treble last season including their eighth consecutive league title. Their new first choice shirt features unusual hoops that get narrower towards the top of the shirt. The change strip is in dark green and yellow with a criss-cross pattern printed into the green part of the shirt. The third strip is, well, a little startling.

The Accies have updated their traditional hooped shirts which now has white rather than red sleeves. According to the launch blurb for the change strip, "The colour choice has been personally put together by members of the board to make this kit a fan's favourite." I love that "personally put together" which presumably refers to taking a look at the Adidas catalogue.

From a distance the new "home" kit is straightforward interpretation of the classic Hearts look. Umbro's new shattered diamonds pattern is printed into the fabric. The 90s revival is continued in the alternative strip with a shirt based on the 1990-91 "away" top. For the first time an all-black strip is introduced which is without sponsorship.

Macron's new first strip is straightforward and traditional with the addition of indented pinstripes on the body. Purple makes a return in the change strip which has a green striped graphic printed into the fabric. Third choice is pale and dark grey with bright lime green highlights.

To mark their 150th anniversary Killie have gone back to their original plain Oxford blue and created a commemorative badge. As this would fall foul of the Court of Lord Lyons, which enforces heraldic rules in Scotland, it appears on the back of the neck. Yellow and blue has proved popular in the past as second choice while last season's striped shirts have become their third kit.

The warm shade of gold worn last season is gone and the first choice strip reverts to bright yellow. This is Nike's new Team Trophy design that features a slightly different tone on the raglan sleeves.

Horizontal pinstripes are added to the traditional amber and claret first top which is now teamed with claret shorts. The change strip is a re-creation of an outfit worn in the early sixties. The bookmaker, Paddy Power, sponsors the shirts but under their #SaveOurShirt campaign their logo does not appear.

Runners up in the league last season earns Rangers a place in the Europa League. The Hummel strips have been popular with fans but this will be the last season they will be worn. The High Court has found the club to be in breach of its previous agreement with Sports Direct and issued an injunction preventing the club from wearing or selling Hummel merchandise next season.

The Staggies have bounced straight back into the Premiership with the Championship title under their belts. We have a typically original and bespoke first shirt in two tones of blue with red and white accents. The change shirt is Macron's Canopus design with the addition of sublimated diamonds on the front. The special edition shirt, which reproduces the club's first colours, celebrates 90 years since their formation. There are no plans for this to be worn in a competitive match.

The Saints' previous supplier, BLK, got into financial difficulties and Macron have won a five year contract to replace them. This was done too late in the day for bespoke shirts to be made up so Macron have supplied two standard templates with their old trademark on.

Saints survive in the Premiership having beaten Dundee United on penalties in the play-off final. I have to say that putting their shirt sponsor on a black rectangle is a mistake. When worn with the alternative black shorts it's going to look like comedy lederhosen. They have worn some flamboyant change strips recently and this one, in magenta and black, is right up there with the best or worst, depending on how traditional you feel.
